Farewell to A Guy I Didn’t Know

-I know a lot of people who knew you, and the puzzle pieces are adding to up to a vivid picture of an individual I feel compelled to write to right now.

-When I type your name in social media, it seems you loved fiercely and checked in on a lot of people all the time, and constantly turned over stones in search of beauty.

-You seemed hurt by rifts that had developed in your community and fought to stay nuanced in the face of others’ demands for something else, as if it were a personal value you just couldn’t abandon.

-My partner is about 98% sure you were the one who walked up to his vanilla, straight edge-identifying ass in a goth club a quarter century ago, sized him up, and earnestly suggested a dog collar would compliment his look.

-The one I’d gathered was your spouse hasn’t actually been your spouse for a long time, but she wrote about you, saying she’d always hoped in a couple decades when y’all were old, you could be friends with inside jokes again. That hurt, cos I feel like that about someone, too.

-I’m not the type to say things like “rest easy” or “safe travels”, but… g’bye, dude. Lots of folks are missing you.✌🏼
